Feeling powerless

However relaxed and positive we might normally be, there are always those moments when it feels like nothing is going as planned; our goals seem too far to reach or our expectations too high to meet.

It might be that we have finally managed our finances only for a major household catastrophe to strike, forcing us to pay out unexpected costs. Or perhaps we finally managed to get an important business date on the calendar, only for something else to go wrong.

Our world, the one called modern, might constantly be expanding in possibilities and yet accomplishing things feels more and more difficult.

Our minds are told to feel free, yet our bodies feel trapped. We are presented with endless options  but not with the adequate means to fulfil them which only accelerates our frustration. What do we do then?

We need to refocus on ourselves and our resources. It is a practical necessity. When we are strained financially we turn to our savings. The same can work with our psychological exhaustion. We focus back on us and our psychological savings.

We must ask: what do I still have control over?

Taking a few min to acknowledge how we feel is the first important step towards refocusing. Ask yourself:

How Am I feeling right now?

I feel overwhelmed. I feel powerless.

What can I do to feel better in this present moment?

Forget the past and the future for a second; focus only on the “now”. Do you need a walk? A talk? Do you need to read a book? Do you need to prioritise just one small task to feel less overwhelmed? The choice is yours. This brings back a sense of control, along with the rewarding feeling of taking action. Once we feel a bit better, we can then go back and navigate the larger obstacles.
